Ethylene glycol is a colorless, practically odorless, low-volatility, low-viscosity, and hygroscopic liquid. It is completely miscible with water and many organic liquids.
Ethylene glycol serves as an important intermediate in a wide range of chemical reactions — most notably in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resins. Its reactivity and solubility provide the foundation for a diverse array of industrial applications.
One of its most well-known uses is as an antifreeze agent, due to its ability to lower the freezing point of water-based solutions.
China is the world’s largest consumer of ethylene glycol (EG), importing over 10 million metric tons of monoethylene glycol (MEG) annually to meet its domestic demand.
