Product Overview

The neutral sulfonate for rust protection and surfactancy

Low-TBN calcium sulfonate carries little or no excess base, which makes it a workhorse rust inhibitor and surfactant rather than a high-TBN acid neutralizer.

With a low Total Base Number, low-TBN (neutral) calcium sulfonate is chosen mainly for its rust and corrosion protection and surfactant properties rather than acid neutralization. It forms a protective, water-displacing film on metal surfaces, making it valuable in rust-preventive oils, lubricants and metalworking fluids. It is often paired with overbased calcium sulfonate so the formulator can dial in both corrosion protection (neutral) and TBN reserve (overbased) independently. It belongs to the sulfonate detergent family.

Applications

Where low-TBN calcium sulfonate is used

Rust-Preventive Oils

Primary rust inhibitor forming a water-displacing protective film on ferrous surfaces.

Lubricating Oils

Corrosion protection and surfactancy in engine and industrial oils, alongside overbased detergents.

Metalworking Fluids

Provides corrosion protection and emulsification in neat and soluble metalworking fluids.

Greases

Calcium sulfonate also serves as a base for calcium sulfonate complex greases and as a rust additive.

Key Advantages

Why formulators choose low-TBN calcium sulfonate

1

Strong rust protection

Forms a tenacious, water-displacing film on metal — excellent corrosion protection in lube and rust-preventive applications.

2

Surfactant performance

Good emulsification and surface activity for metalworking fluids and detergency support.

3

Pairs with overbased grades

Combine with overbased calcium sulfonate to set corrosion and TBN reserve independently.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is low-TBN calcium sulfonate used for?
Low-TBN (neutral) calcium sulfonate is used mainly as a rust inhibitor and surfactant rather than an acid neutralizer. Its low base content makes it ideal for rust-preventive oils, corrosion protection in lubricants, and emulsification in metalworking fluids. It forms a water-displacing protective film on metal surfaces. For acid neutralization and TBN reserve, formulators use overbased calcium sulfonate instead, often combining the two.
What is the difference between low-TBN and overbased calcium sulfonate?
Low-TBN (neutral) calcium sulfonate has little or no excess base — TBN near zero to low double digits — and is used for rust protection and surfactancy. Overbased calcium sulfonate carries a large reserve of colloidal calcium carbonate, giving a high TBN (hundreds of mg KOH/g) for acid neutralization and detergency. Neutral grades protect against corrosion; overbased grades provide TBN reserve. Many oils use both.
Can low-TBN calcium sulfonate be used in metalworking fluids?
Yes. Low-TBN calcium sulfonate is widely used in metalworking fluids for its corrosion protection and surfactant/emulsifier properties. It helps protect machined surfaces from rust and contributes to fluid stability in soluble and neat oils. Sinolook can advise on the right grade for your metalworking fluid system.
What TBN does low-TBN calcium sulfonate have?
Low-TBN (neutral) calcium sulfonate typically has a TBN in the region of 0 to around 50 mg KOH/g, depending on grade. This is far lower than overbased grades (300–500 mg KOH/g). The low base content is intentional — it is selected for rust and surfactant performance, not acid neutralization. Exact TBN is confirmed on the TDS and batch COA.
Can Sinolook provide TDS, MSDS and COA?
Yes. TDS, MSDS (GHS-format SDS) and a batch-specific COA are provided for every grade in English or Chinese. Sinolook supplies low-TBN calcium sulfonate in drum, IBC, flexitank and ISO tank quantities to over 60 countries. Email sales@sinolook.com or message us on WhatsApp.
