Medium-TBN calcium sulfonate offers a middle path — useful TBN reserve combined with strong detergency and rust protection, without the very high base of fully overbased grades.
With a moderate Total Base Number, medium-TBN calcium sulfonate gives formulators a balance of acid neutralization, detergency and corrosion protection in a single additive. It suits engine oils and industrial lubricants where a fully overbased grade would be more TBN than needed, and where the detergent should also contribute meaningful rust protection. It is commonly used together with overbased and low-TBN grades to fine-tune the detergent system. It belongs to the sulfonate detergent family.
