Product Overview

The sulfonic acid intermediate for sulfonate detergents

Before a sulfonate detergent can be made, a sulfonic acid must be produced. LABSA is a key linear sulfonic acid intermediate, neutralized into calcium and other sulfonate detergents and surfactants.

LABSA (linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid) is an important sulfonic acid intermediate. It is produced by sulfonating linear alkylbenzene and serves as the feedstock for sulfonate detergents and surfactants — neutralized with calcium, magnesium or other bases to make the sulfonate detergents used in lubricants, and widely used to make surfactants for cleaning and industrial applications. Note that LABSA is the sulfonic acid intermediate, distinct from the finished neutralized sulfonate detergent. It is part of the specialty additives range.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is LABSA used for?
LABSA (linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid) is a sulfonic acid intermediate used as feedstock to make sulfonate detergents and surfactants. In lubricants, it is neutralized with calcium or other bases to produce sulfonate detergents; more broadly it is used to make surfactants for cleaning and industrial applications. It is the acid intermediate, not the finished neutralized detergent.
What is the difference between LABSA and calcium sulfonate?
LABSA is the sulfonic acid intermediate; calcium sulfonate is the finished detergent made by neutralizing a sulfonic acid with a calcium base. LABSA is a feedstock used to produce sulfonate detergents and surfactants, while calcium sulfonate is the ready-to-use lubricant detergent. See overbased calcium sulfonate.
Is LABSA used in lubricants directly?
LABSA is primarily an intermediate — it is neutralized into sulfonate detergents before use in finished lubricants, rather than added as an acid directly. Lubricant blenders and detergent manufacturers use it as the feedstock to produce the calcium and magnesium sulfonate detergents that go into oils. For finished detergents, see sulfonate detergents.
What grades of LABSA are available?
LABSA is typically supplied at high active matter (around 96–98%) with controlled free oil and free sulphuric acid. Grade characteristics such as active matter, colour and impurity levels affect downstream detergent and surfactant quality. The exact specification is confirmed on the TDS and batch COA — discuss your requirement with Sinolook.
Can Sinolook provide TDS, MSDS and COA?
Yes. TDS, MSDS (GHS-format SDS) and a batch-specific COA are provided for every grade in English or Chinese. Sinolook supplies LABSA in drum, IBC, flexitank and ISO tank quantities to over 60 countries. Email sales@sinolook.com or message us on WhatsApp.
