About Specialty Additives

Building blocks and niche chemistries for additive manufacturers

Beyond the main additive families lies a layer of specialty chemicals — the intermediates that additives are made from, and niche functional additives for specific problems. These serve additive manufacturers and blenders, not just finished-oil formulators.

Sinolook's specialty range covers two roles. Intermediates — LABSA and synthetic dialkylbenzene sulfonic acid (the raw materials neutralized into sulfonate detergents), and PIBSA (the building block for PIBSI dispersants) — let additive producers manufacture their own packages. Direct-use functional additives — thiadiazole metal deactivators — protect copper and non-ferrous metals from corrosion in gear oils, greases and metal-working fluids. All four supplied at bulk scale with full documentation and consistent batch-to-batch purity.

Where These Products Fit

Intermediate or finished additive — know what you're buying

Three of these products are intermediates — building blocks that additive manufacturers convert into finished detergents and dispersants. One (thiadiazole) is a direct-use functional additive. This map shows where each fits in the value chain.

Specialty additives in the value chain Intermediates (left) → finished additives (right) · plus a direct-use functional additive INTERMEDIATE (raw material) PROCESS FINISHED ADDITIVE (downstream) LABSA + Synthetic DABSA linear / dialkylbenzene sulfonic acid neutralize with Ca / Mg / Ba + overbase Sulfonate Detergents → Ca / Mg / Ba sulfonate (engine oil) PIBSA polyisobutylene succinic anhydride react with polyamine PIBSI Dispersants → ashless succinimide (engine oil) Thiadiazole Metal Deactivator — DIRECT-USE FUNCTIONAL ADDITIVE No further processing needed — added directly to gear oils, greases, hydraulic & metal-working fluids Protects copper & non-ferrous metals · neutralizes active sulphur from EP additives

If you manufacture additives, the intermediates (LABSA, DABSA, PIBSA) are your building blocks. If you blend finished oils, thiadiazole is ready to dose directly. Sinolook supplies both the intermediates and the finished detergents / dispersants they become — so you can source at whichever stage suits you.

ADVANTAGE 01

Intermediate + finished additive supply

Buy LABSA/DABSA and make your own sulfonate, or buy our finished sulfonate detergents. Buy PIBSA and make your own dispersant, or buy finished PIBSI. Your choice.

ADVANTAGE 02

Consistent intermediate purity

Intermediates feed directly into your additive synthesis — so batch-to-batch purity and consistency are critical. Every batch is verified to keep your downstream process stable.

ADVANTAGE 03

Copper protection expertise

Thiadiazole metal deactivators are essential when EP additives contain active sulphur — we help you balance EP performance against copper corrosion in gear, grease and MWF formulations.

ADVANTAGE 04

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about specialty additives

What are specialty lubricant additives?
Specialty lubricant additives are intermediates and niche-function chemicals that sit outside the main additive families (detergents, dispersants, anti-wear, antioxidants). Sinolook's specialty range covers two categories:
1. Intermediates used to manufacture finished additives — LABSA and synthetic dialkylbenzene sulfonic acid (raw materials for sulfonate detergents) and PIBSA (the intermediate for PIBSI dispersants);
2. Direct-use functional additives such as thiadiazole metal deactivators and copper corrosion inhibitors.

These products serve additive manufacturers, blenders and formulators who need specific building blocks or niche performance chemistries.
What is LABSA and what is it used for?
LABSA (Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonic Acid) is an anionic sulfonic acid produced by sulfonating linear alkylbenzene. In the lubricant industry it is the key intermediate for manufacturing sulfonate detergents — it is neutralized with calcium, magnesium or barium hydroxide and over-based to produce the detergent additives used in engine oils. LABSA is also widely used as a surfactant raw material outside lubricants (detergents, cleaners). Sinolook supplies LABSA as a high-purity sulfonic acid intermediate for additive manufacturers producing their own sulfonate detergent packages.
What is PIBSA and how is it different from PIBSI?
PIBSA (Polyisobutylene Succinic Anhydride) is the intermediate; PIBSI (Polyisobutylene Succinimide) is the finished dispersant.

PIBSA is made by reacting polyisobutylene with maleic anhydride. It is then reacted with a polyamine to produce PIBSI — the ashless dispersant used in engine oils. PIBSA itself is sold to dispersant manufacturers as a building block, and is also used directly as an emulsifier, rust inhibitor and in fuel additive applications.

In short: PIBSA is the raw material, PIBSI is the dispersant product made from it. Sinolook supplies both — PIBSA here as an intermediate, and finished PIBSI in the ashless dispersants range.
What is a thiadiazole metal deactivator?
A thiadiazole metal deactivator (typically a 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, or DMTD, derivative) is a multifunctional additive that protects non-ferrous metals — especially copper and its alloys — from corrosion. It works by forming a protective chemisorbed film on copper surfaces, which:
1. Prevents the metal from catalyzing oil oxidation;
2. Stops copper being attacked by active sulphur from EP additives.

Thiadiazoles are used in industrial gear oils, hydraulic fluids, greases, metal-working fluids and engine oils. They are particularly important in formulations containing sulphur-based EP additives, where uncontrolled copper corrosion would otherwise be a problem. See our anti-wear & EP additives.
Who buys specialty additives and intermediates?
Specialty additives and intermediates are mainly purchased by additive manufacturers and lubricant blenders rather than end users:
LABSA, synthetic DABSA and PIBSA are bought by companies that manufacture their own detergent and dispersant packages and need consistent, high-purity building blocks.
Thiadiazole metal deactivators are bought by blenders formulating industrial gear oils, greases and metal-working fluids who need copper protection.

Sinolook supplies all four at bulk scale with full documentation, serving additive producers and blenders across 60+ countries.
What is the difference between LABSA and synthetic dialkylbenzene sulfonic acid?
Both are sulfonic acid intermediates for sulfonate detergents, but differ in structure and performance:
LABSA (Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonic Acid) has a single linear alkyl chain — cost-effective, widely available, the standard feedstock for general sulfonate detergents.
Synthetic Dialkylbenzene Sulfonic Acid has two alkyl chains and is synthetically produced — giving higher purity, better oil solubility and more consistent performance. Preferred for premium sulfonate detergents and high-performance rust preventives.

Synthetic dialkylbenzene sulfonic acid is the higher-tier choice where consistency and oil solubility matter most.
Can Sinolook supply both intermediates and the finished additives?
Yes — this is a key advantage. Sinolook supplies:
LABSA / DABSA (intermediates) and finished sulfonate detergents
PIBSA (intermediate) and finished PIBSI dispersants

This means whether you are an additive manufacturer wanting building blocks, or a blender wanting ready-to-use finished additives, you can source from one supplier. It also gives supply-chain flexibility — switch between intermediate and finished sourcing as your operation evolves.
Can Sinolook provide TDS, MSDS, COA and bulk supply?
Yes. Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS / SDS in GHS format), and batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) are provided for every specialty additive and intermediate in English or Chinese. As intermediates are often used at large scale, we supply in drums, IBC totes, flexitanks and ISO tanks with consistent purity batch to batch. Email sales@sinolook.com or message us on WhatsApp.
