Product Overview

The direct-use copper deactivator for yellow-metal protection

Unlike the sulfonic acid and anhydride intermediates, thiadiazole is a direct-use additive — a metal deactivator that protects copper and yellow metals from corrosion.

Thiadiazole (a DMTD — 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole — derivative) is a direct-use metal deactivator and copper corrosion inhibitor. It forms a protective film on copper and other yellow metals, preventing the corrosion that active sulphur (from EP additives) can cause and passing the copper strip corrosion test. It also contributes supplementary anti-wear and antioxidant character. Unlike the sulfonic acid and anhydride intermediates in this range, thiadiazole is added directly to finished lubricants — gear oils, greases, industrial and hydraulic oils. It is part of the specialty additives range and is widely referenced across gear and grease formulations.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is thiadiazole used for?
Thiadiazole (a DMTD derivative) is a direct-use metal deactivator and copper corrosion inhibitor. It forms a protective film on copper and yellow metals, preventing the corrosion that active EP sulphur can cause and passing the copper strip corrosion test. It also adds supplementary anti-wear and antioxidant character, and is used in gear oils, greases, hydraulic and industrial oils.
Why do EP gear oils need a copper deactivator?
Extreme-pressure (EP) gear oils contain active sulphur that protects against gear wear but can corrode copper and bronze components such as worm gears and synchronizers. A copper deactivator like thiadiazole forms a protective film on these yellow metals, preventing corrosion while allowing the EP additives to protect the steel gears. This is essential for GL-4/GL-5 and industrial gear oils. See industrial & marine additives.
Is thiadiazole an intermediate or a finished additive?
Thiadiazole is a direct-use finished additive, added directly to lubricants — unlike the sulfonic acid (LABSA) and anhydride (PIBSA) intermediates in the specialty range, which are neutralized or reacted before use. Thiadiazole goes straight into the finished oil or grease as a metal deactivator. See PIBSA for an intermediate example.
What is DMTD?
DMTD is 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, the base structure from which thiadiazole metal deactivators are derived. DMTD derivatives are highly effective copper and yellow-metal corrosion inhibitors, forming protective films that pass copper strip corrosion tests. They are widely used in gear oils, greases and industrial oils where active sulphur or copper corrosion is a concern.
Can Sinolook provide TDS, MSDS and COA?
Yes. TDS, MSDS (GHS-format SDS) and a batch-specific COA are provided for every grade in English or Chinese. Sinolook supplies thiadiazole metal deactivator in drum, IBC, flexitank and ISO tank quantities to over 60 countries. Email sales@sinolook.com or message us on WhatsApp.
