About Group II Base Oil

The modern base stock for premium lubricants

Group II base oil is hydrocracked paraffinic base oil — the workhorse base stock that replaced Group I in modern engine oil and ATF formulations.

Through severe hydrocracking and catalytic dewaxing, Group II achieves over 99% saturates and sulphur below 30 ppm — dramatically improving oxidation stability, volatility (Noack) and colour compared to solvent-refined Group I. The result: longer drain intervals, better OEM approvals and reliable performance in API SN, SP, ACEA C2/C3 and dexos formulations.

Sinolook offers a complete Group II portfolio: 100N and 150N for light to medium viscosity, plus 500N for heavy-grade applications — all sourced through our multi-supplier network anchored by major Chinese state-owned refineries including Sinopec, CNOOC and Sinochem.

How It's Made

The hydrocracking process

Group II is produced through severe catalytic hydrocracking — a high-pressure hydrogen-treatment process that saturates aromatic compounds and removes sulphur, producing premium base oil that solvent refining cannot match.

Group I vs Group II

Why blenders are switching from Group I to Group II

If you currently formulate with Group I (SN150, SN500, BS150), upgrading to Group II 150N or 500N typically delivers longer drain intervals, better OEM compliance, and lower volatility — at a competitive cost premium.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Group II base oil?
Group II base oil is hydrocracked or hydroprocessed paraffinic base oil with greater than 90% saturates, less than 0.03% sulphur and a viscosity index between 80 and 120. The hydrocracking process saturates aromatic molecules and removes sulphur, giving Group II better oxidation stability, lower volatility (Noack) and lighter colour than Group I.
What is the difference between Group I and Group II base oil?
Group I is solvent-refined: <90% saturates, >0.03% sulphur, VI 80–120, pale yellow colour.
Group II is hydrocracked: >99% saturates, <30 ppm sulphur, VI 95–120, water-clear (Saybolt +30).
Group II offers significantly better oxidation stability, longer drain intervals and OEM compliance — it's the standard for modern engine oils, ATF and premium industrial lubricants.
Where does Sinolook source Group II 500N from?
Sinolook sources Group II 500N through a multi-supplier network anchored by major Chinese state-owned refineries — Sinopec, CNOOC and Sinochem — with selective supplementary sourcing from regional producers (including Formosa Plastics, SK and others) on a project basis. This multi-source approach delivers supply security, competitive pricing, and the flexibility to match specific batch requirements without dependency on any single producer. Every shipment carries SGS verification.
Why does 500N have a lower viscosity index than 100N or 150N?
Higher-viscosity Group II grades are produced from heavier vacuum gas oil cuts containing more cycloparaffinic structures, which slightly reduce the VI even after severe hydrocracking. 500N at VI 95-100 is at the lower end of the Group II range (80–120) but still qualifies under the API Group II definition (saturates >90%, sulphur <0.03%).

For HDDO 15W-40, this VI is more than adequate. For applications requiring VI >120 at 500N viscosity (e.g. premium PCMO 10W-40 with low Noack), consider blending Group II with Group III ADbase 6 cSt or 8 cSt.
Which Group II grade should I choose?
Choose by viscosity requirement:
100N (KV100 = 3.8) — automatic transmission fluid (ATF), 0W-20 / 5W-20 engine oils, low-vis hydraulic, refrigeration oil base.
150N (KV100 = 6.1) — the workhorse for PCMO 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, premium industrial lubricants, gear oil blending.
500N (KV100 = 10.3) — HDDO 15W-40 (CK-4, CJ-4), ISO VG 100–220 gear oils, marine system oils, VI booster.
What OEM approvals do Sinolook Group II grades support?
As base stocks, our Group II grades are suitable for use in finished lubricants targeting API SN, SN-Plus, SP, ILSAC GF-5/GF-6, ACEA A3/B4, A5/B5, C2/C3, GM dexos1 Gen 2, MB-229.3/229.5, MAN M3275, Volvo VDS-3, and major HDDO specs CK-4 / FA-4. Final OEM approvals depend on the additive package and formulation by the lubricant blender.
What documents accompany each shipment?
Every shipment includes:
• Third-party SGS Certificate of Quality (with loading-port inspection)
• Manufacturer Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each batch
• Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
• Bill of Lading, packing list, commercial invoice
• Certificate of Origin (on request)
Can I request samples before placing an order?
Yes. Sinolook provides 500ml to 1L laboratory samples of 100N, 150N or 500N for formulation evaluation. Sample requests are subject to courier cost. Email sales@sinolook.com with the grade and required quantity.
