Polyisobutylene Succinimide (Mono-type)
Mono-type polyisobutylene succinimide (PIBSI) — an ashless dispersant that suspends sludge, soot and deposit precursors, with the mono structure giving good low-temperature dispersancy and seal compatibility.
The ashless dispersant that keeps contaminants suspended
Dispersants are the part of an engine oil that holds sludge, soot and oxidation products in fine suspension so they cannot agglomerate into harmful deposits.
Mono-type polyisobutylene succinimide (PIBSI) is an ashless dispersant built from a polyisobutylene (PIB) tail attached to a polyamine head through a single succinimide linkage. The PIB tail keeps it oil-soluble while the polyamine head latches onto sludge, soot and deposit precursors, holding them in fine suspension. The mono structure (one PIB chain per molecule) gives good low-temperature dispersancy and seal compatibility, making it valuable where these properties matter. Dispersants are typically the largest additive component by mass in an engine oil and are used with detergents to keep engines clean.

Where mono-type PIBSI dispersant is used
Passenger Car Engine Oils
Suspends sludge and deposit precursors for clean PCMO. See engine oil additives.
Low-Temperature Sludge Control
Mono structure gives good cold-sludge dispersancy.
Seal-Sensitive Formulations
Lower nitrogen coupling supports elastomer seal compatibility.
Detergent-Dispersant Systems
Works with detergents to keep engines clean over the drain interval.
Why formulators choose mono-type PIBSI dispersant
Effective sludge dispersancy
Holds sludge, soot and oxidation products in fine suspension, preventing deposits.
Good low-temperature performance
Mono structure supports cold-sludge control in stop-start service.
Seal compatibility
Mono coupling helps balance dispersancy against elastomer seal protection.
