Product Overview

The classic, powerful silicone antifoam

Foam ruins lubrication — it carries air into pumps, accelerates oxidation and causes overflow. PDMS silicone antifoam controls surface foam powerfully at very low treat rates.

PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) silicone antifoam is the classic and most powerful foam-control additive. Insoluble silicone droplets dispersed in the oil destabilize foam bubbles at the surface, collapsing foam rapidly at very low treat rates (parts per million). It is highly effective at controlling surface foam in engine oils, industrial oils and many lubricants. The trade-off to manage is air release: too much silicone, or poor dispersion, can slow the release of entrained air, so dose and dispersion are controlled carefully — in air-release-critical oils like turbine oils, silicone-free types may be preferred. It is part of the antifoam agents range.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is PDMS silicone antifoam used for?
PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) silicone antifoam is the classic, most powerful foam-control additive for lubricants. Insoluble silicone droplets destabilize foam bubbles at the oil surface, collapsing foam at very low treat rates (ppm level). It is used in engine oils, gear oils and many industrial oils to control surface foam, which otherwise carries air into pumps and causes overflow and oxidation.
How does silicone antifoam work?
Silicone antifoam works because it is insoluble in oil and has a very low surface tension. Dispersed as fine droplets, it enters foam bubble films and destabilizes them, causing the foam to collapse. Because it is so effective, only parts-per-million are needed. The key is good dispersion at the right dose — too much or poorly dispersed silicone can slow air release. See silicone-free antifoam.
What is the difference between foam control and air release?
Surface foam is bubbles on the oil's surface; entrained air is tiny bubbles within the bulk oil. Silicone antifoam controls surface foam very effectively, but at high dose or poor dispersion it can slow air release, trapping entrained air. The two properties can be in tension, which is why dose and dispersion are controlled carefully — and why air-release-critical oils may use silicone-free antifoam. See hydraulic oil additives.
Why is the treat rate of silicone antifoam so low?
Silicone antifoam is extremely effective, so it works at parts-per-million levels — far lower than most additives. Using more than needed does not improve foam control and can harm air release, so precise low dosing and good dispersion are essential. This is why silicone antifoam is typically added as a diluted concentrate for accurate dosing.
