Product Overview

The premium viscosity modifier for low-temperature performance

Viscosity modifiers thicken oil more at high temperature than low, flattening the viscosity-temperature curve. PMA does this with outstanding low-temperature behaviour and a built-in pour point benefit.

Polymethacrylate (PMA) is the premium viscosity modifier (VM / viscosity index improver), prized for excellent low-temperature performance and shear stability. Its comb-like polymer structure delivers good thickening efficiency while also depressing the pour point — a bonus that few other VMs provide. This makes PMA the preferred choice for automatic transmission fluids (ATF), hydraulic oils (HVLP), gear oils and high-VI multigrade oils that must perform across wide temperature ranges. It is part of the viscosity index improver range and contrasts with OCP and HSD types.

Applications

Where PMA viscosity modifier is used

Automatic Transmission Fluids

Preferred VM for ATF wide-temperature operation. See transmission fluid additives.

Hydraulic Oils (HVLP)

High-VI multigrade hydraulic oils. See hydraulic oil.

Gear Oils

Multigrade gear oils needing low-temperature flow.

High-VI Oils

Wide-temperature oils benefiting from PMA's low-temperature strength.

Key Advantages

Why formulators choose PMA viscosity modifier

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a polymethacrylate (PMA) viscosity modifier used for?
Polymethacrylate (PMA) is a premium viscosity modifier (viscosity index improver) used to give oils good multigrade performance with excellent low-temperature behaviour. It also depresses the pour point as a bonus. PMA is preferred for automatic transmission fluids (ATF), hydraulic oils (HVLP), gear oils and high-VI oils that must work across wide temperature ranges.
Why is PMA good for low temperatures?
PMA's comb-like polymer structure gives excellent low-temperature behaviour — it stays effective and helps the oil flow at cold temperatures, and it also depresses the pour point. This makes PMA the VM of choice for oils that must perform in cold conditions, such as ATF, HVLP hydraulic oils and multigrade gear oils. See OCP for a contrasting VM.
What is the difference between PMA and OCP viscosity modifiers?
PMA (polymethacrylate) offers excellent low-temperature performance and built-in pour point depression, making it premium for ATF, hydraulic and high-VI oils. OCP (olefin copolymer) is the cost-effective workhorse VM for engine oils, with good thickening efficiency but without PMA's low-temperature and pour point advantages. The choice depends on performance needs and cost. See olefin copolymer.
Does PMA depress pour point as well as modify viscosity?
Yes. One of PMA's distinctive advantages is that it depresses the pour point in addition to modifying viscosity — a dual benefit few other viscosity modifiers provide. This can reduce or supplement the separate pour point depressant needed, simplifying the formulation. See pour point depressants.
Can Sinolook provide TDS, MSDS and COA?
Yes. TDS, MSDS (GHS-format SDS) and a batch-specific COA are provided for every grade in English or Chinese. Sinolook supplies PMA viscosity modifier in drum, IBC, flexitank and ISO tank quantities to over 60 countries. Email sales@sinolook.com or message us on WhatsApp.
