Product Overview

The triple-function additive at the heart of every engine oil

ZDDP is the most important single additive in lubrication — one molecule delivering anti-wear, antioxidant and anti-corrosion protection. The primary-alkyl type adds thermal robustness.

Primary ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) is built from primary alcohols, giving it good thermal stability alongside the three core ZDDP functions: anti-wear (forming a protective tribofilm at metal contacts), antioxidant (decomposing peroxides that degrade the oil), and anti-corrosion. The primary-alkyl structure decomposes at higher temperatures than secondary ZDDP, making it well suited to high-temperature applications and where thermal durability is prized, such as industrial and certain engine oils. ZDDP is central to engine oil, hydraulic oil and many industrial lubricant formulations.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is ZDDP used for?
ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) is the lubrication industry's most important anti-wear and antioxidant additive. A single molecule provides three functions: anti-wear (forming a protective tribofilm at metal contacts), antioxidant (decomposing peroxides that degrade the oil) and anti-corrosion. It is essential in engine oils, hydraulic oils and many industrial lubricants. Primary ZDDP adds good thermal stability.
What is the difference between primary and secondary ZDDP?
The difference is the alcohol used to make the ZDDP. Primary ZDDP (from primary alcohols) has better thermal stability and decomposes at higher temperatures, suiting high-temperature service. Secondary ZDDP decomposes at lower temperatures, which can give faster anti-wear film formation but less thermal durability. Formulators choose based on the temperature and anti-wear response needed. See secondary/primary blend ZDDP.
How does ZDDP protect against wear?
ZDDP reacts at metal contact points under heat and pressure to form a protective phosphate-rich tribofilm. This sacrificial film carries the load and prevents direct metal-to-metal contact, dramatically reducing wear. The film continuously reforms as it is worn away, giving durable boundary-lubrication protection — which is why ZDDP is the backbone anti-wear additive in engine and hydraulic oils.
Why is ZDDP phosphorus limited in modern oils?
ZDDP contains phosphorus, which can poison catalytic converters and emission systems over time. Modern low-SAPS engine oils therefore limit phosphorus (and sulphated ash and sulphur), constraining ZDDP treat rates. Formulators balance the anti-wear and antioxidant performance ZDDP provides against these limits, sometimes adding ashless anti-wear and antioxidants to compensate. See anti-wear agents.
Can Sinolook provide TDS, MSDS and COA?
Yes. TDS, MSDS (GHS-format SDS) and a batch-specific COA are provided for every grade in English or Chinese. Sinolook supplies primary ZDDP in drum, IBC, flexitank and ISO tank quantities to over 60 countries. Email sales@sinolook.com or message us on WhatsApp.
