PIBSA (Polyisobutylene Succinic Anhydride)
PIBSA (polyisobutylene succinic anhydride) — the key intermediate for producing ashless succinimide dispersants and emulsifiers. The precursor reacted with polyamines to make PIBSI.
The intermediate behind every succinimide dispersant
Before an ashless dispersant can be made, its anhydride precursor must be produced. PIBSA is that intermediate — reacted with polyamines to make the PIBSI dispersants that keep engines clean.
PIBSA (polyisobutylene succinic anhydride) is the key intermediate for producing ashless succinimide dispersants. It is made by reacting polyisobutylene with maleic anhydride, then reacted with polyamines to produce the PIBSI dispersants that suspend sludge and soot in engine oils. PIBSA is also used to make emulsifiers and other derivatives. Note that PIBSA is the anhydride intermediate — distinct from the finished succinimide dispersant (PIBSI) made from it. It is part of the specialty additives range.
PIBSA (Polyisobutylene Succinic Anhydride) — typical properties
Representative typical values for PIBSA. Indicative only — exact values vary by grade and are confirmed on the TDS and batch COA.
| Property | Typical Value | Method / Note |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Amber to brown viscous liquid | Visual |
| Saponification number | Grade-dependent | Indicates anhydride content |
| PIB molecular weight | Tailored (e.g. ~1000–2300) | Grade-dependent |
| Free PIB | Grade-dependent | Refer to TDS |
| Type | Succinic anhydride intermediate | For dispersant production |
| Kinematic viscosity (100°C) | Grade-dependent | ASTM D445 |
| Function | Dispersant/emulsifier feedstock | Intermediate |
Typical values for guidance only — not a specification. Request the TDS for the specific grade you need; the COA reports actual measured values for your batch.
