MoDTC (Molybdenum Dithiocarbamate)
MoDTC (molybdenum dithiocarbamate) — the leading molybdenum friction modifier for fuel economy. Phosphorus-free, it forms a low-friction MoS₂ film for outstanding friction reduction.
The leading friction modifier for fuel economy
MoDTC is the premier molybdenum friction modifier — phosphorus-free and forming a highly effective low-friction MoS₂ film that delivers the fuel economy modern engine oils demand.
MoDTC (molybdenum dithiocarbamate) is the leading molybdenum friction modifier, central to the fuel economy of modern engine oils. Under load it forms a low-friction molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂) tribofilm that dramatically reduces boundary friction, lowering energy losses and improving fuel economy. Being phosphorus-free, it fits the constraints of low-SAPS engine oils where phosphorus is limited. MoDTC also contributes antioxidant character. It is the go-to friction modifier for passenger car oils targeting fuel economy (API SP, GF-6) and is part of the anti-wear agents range.
MoDTC (Molybdenum Dithiocarbamate) — typical properties
Representative typical values for MoDTC. Indicative only — exact values vary by grade and are confirmed on the TDS and batch COA.
| Property | Typical Value | Method / Note |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Amber to dark liquid | Visual |
| Molybdenum content | ~9–11 wt% | Grade-dependent |
| Phosphorus content | Phosphorus-free | Low-SAPS friendly |
| Sulphur content | Present | MoS₂ film former |
| Kinematic viscosity (100°C) | ~10–40 mm²/s | ASTM D445 |
| Flash point (COC) | > ~150 °C | ASTM D92 |
| Function | Friction modifier + AO | Fuel economy |
Typical values for guidance only — not a specification. Request the TDS for the specific grade you need; the COA reports actual measured values for your batch.
Where MoDTC is used

Why formulators choose MoDTC
Outstanding friction reduction
The leading molybdenum friction modifier — forms a highly effective low-friction MoS₂ film.
Phosphorus-free
Fits low-SAPS phosphorus limits where MoDTP's phosphorus would count against the budget.
Fuel economy
Central to the fuel-economy performance of modern engine oils.
