Product Overview

The multifunctional molybdenum additive

Oil-soluble molybdenum additives are prized because one molecule delivers anti-wear, antioxidant and friction-reducing performance at once. MoDTP brings all three with its phosphorus-containing structure.

MoDTP (molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate) is an oil-soluble organomolybdenum additive that provides anti-wear, antioxidant and friction-reducing performance. Under load it forms a low-friction molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂) tribofilm at metal contacts, reducing both wear and friction — the latter supporting fuel economy. Its phosphorus content also contributes anti-wear character. MoDTP is used in engine oils, including diesel oils, and industrial lubricants where multifunctional molybdenum performance is valued. It is part of the anti-wear agents range and is often used with ZDDP and friction modifiers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is MoDTP used for?
MoDTP (molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate) is an oil-soluble molybdenum additive providing anti-wear, antioxidant and friction-reducing performance in engine and industrial oils. It forms a low-friction molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂) film at metal contacts, reducing wear and friction, and its phosphorus content adds anti-wear character — a multifunctional additive often used with ZDDP.
What is the difference between MoDTP and MoDTC?
Both are oil-soluble molybdenum additives that form low-friction MoS₂ films. MoDTP (dithiophosphate) contains phosphorus, adding anti-wear character; MoDTC (dithiocarbamate) is phosphorus-free and is the leading friction modifier for fuel economy. MoDTC is generally the stronger friction reducer; MoDTP adds phosphorus anti-wear. The choice depends on the friction, anti-wear and low-SAPS requirements. See MoDTC.
How does molybdenum reduce friction?
Under load and temperature, oil-soluble molybdenum additives form a thin layer of molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂) at the metal contact. MoS₂ has a layered structure that shears easily, giving very low friction — like a solid lubricant formed in situ. This friction reduction lowers energy losses and supports fuel economy, which is why molybdenum additives are valued in modern engine oils.
Does MoDTP contain phosphorus?
Yes. MoDTP (molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate) contains phosphorus as part of its structure, which contributes anti-wear character but counts toward low-SAPS phosphorus limits. Where phosphorus must be minimized, phosphorus-free MoDTC is often preferred for friction reduction. Formulators balance the friction, anti-wear and phosphorus budget. See MoDTC.
Can Sinolook provide TDS, MSDS and COA?
Yes. TDS, MSDS (GHS-format SDS) and a batch-specific COA are provided for every grade in English or Chinese. Sinolook supplies MoDTP in drum, IBC, flexitank and ISO tank quantities to over 60 countries. Email sales@sinolook.com or message us on WhatsApp.
